James Samala, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC (He/Him) is a board-certified Doctor of Nursing Practice and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based, and integrative mental health care. He earned his doctorate from Rutgers University and completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Wagner College. Dr. Samala holds dual licensure in New York and New

Jersey.


With over eight years of clinical experience in psychiatry, medical-surgical, and outpatient settings, Dr. Samala brings a well-rounded, patient-centered approach to care. His doctoral capstone project reflected his commitment to supporting the well-being of healthcare professionals by implementing a mindfulness-based stress reduction initiative designed to reduce burnout and improve resilience among nurses.


Dr. Samala received his clinical training across a wide range of settings, including inpatient psychiatric units and outpatient community-based clinics serving underserved populations. He has a particular passion for working with young adults navigating trauma, neurodivergence, and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. He proudly serves BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities and strives to create a supportive, affirming space for individuals and families of diverse backgrounds to feel heard, respected and empowered in their healing journey. His holistic and integrative approach combines psychopharmacology with lifestyle modifications such as nutrition, supplementation, exercise, and therapy.


He has experience in treating a variety of psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, and autism spectrum disorders. He is known for his cultural sensitivity, collaborative treatment philosophy, and emphasis on whole-person care—blending medication management with supportive therapy and wellness coaching.


Dr. Samala remains active in continuing education and is a proud member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.


Originally from the Philippines and now based in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Samala is deeply committed to expanding access to quality mental health care in marginalized communities. Outside of his clinical work, he is an avid skier in the winter and enjoys returning to the Philippine islands in the summer to reconnect with his roots.


Dr. Samala believes that healing begins by meeting clients where they are—with empathy, cultural humility, and personalized care.
